Perperikon

The fortress was built on the remains of an ancient Thracian sanctuary, as it has been for centuries the holiest place for worship in these lands. The complex includes a fortress wall, an acropolis and a dwelling complex.

Devil’s Throat Cave

The cave was named in this way due to the rocks around its entrance, which looked like a gaping mouth. If the river carries something into this cave, it will never be retrieved.

Uhlovitsa Cave

The cave Uhlovitsa is one of the most beautiful caves in Bulgaria. It is located in the Rhodopi mountain, in Smolian area, about 2-3 kilometers north-east of Mogilitsa village. The border with Greece is nearby in southern direction.

Yagodinska Cave

Being 10500 meters long, the cave Yagodinska is the third longest cave in Bulgaria and it is the longest cave in the Rhodopi mountain. It has three main levels and two intermediate levels and it is has been formed in Proterozoic marble area. Utilities were installed on the third floor during the period year 1971-1982, as the tourist cave road is 1100 meters long.

The Weird Bridges

The weird bridges are one of the most interesting natural phenomena in Bulgaria, located in the Central Rhodopi mountain on the eastern slope of the mountain ridge Chernotitsa. They are 1450 meters above sea level and are situated 80 kilometers south of Plovdiv and 35 kilometers north-west of Chepelare town.

Rojen Observatory

The National Astronomical Observatory Rojen is the biggest operational scientific astrophysics complex in South-east Europe. It was opened in March, year 1981 and it is a division of the Institute of Astronomy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The Waterfall Canyon

The whole mountain route along the ecological path to Karluk has been designated with information boards and signs for tourists. But the canyon of waterfalls is only one of the natural phenomena in Smolian administrative district.

Momchilova Fotress

Momchilova fortress is the first socialized archeological site along the Milk Road-the antique central trans-Rhodopi road, which has connected The Aegean Sea region with the Thracian plain.

Krastova Gora (Cross Forest)

Christianity flourished in the Middle Rhodopi mountain till mid-XVII century, despite the fact that this region was under Ottoman rule. There were many churches and monasteries, priests and monks.

Agushevi Complex

Agushievi resting complex is located in Mogilitsa village, which is only 25 kilometers away from Smolian town. It was built in the middle of 19 century by Bulgarian building masters for the local Turkish ruler Agush aga and for his three sons.
